Shubham Matah

The Campaign:

Current VP Shubham Matah‘s campaign proposals were:

  1. Formation of the “Alternate Careers Group” under the TSG in order to provide students with information about alternate career paths.
  2. Introduce changes to improve the placements in IIT Kharagpur
  3. Provide additional infrastructure to student groups for conducting meetings.
  4. Tie-up with Big Bazaar for home delivery of merchandise at discounted prices via tele-shopping.
  5. Get Sponsored Industrial B.Tech and M.Tech projects for students

His opponent in the race was Digvijay Gagneja and these were his proposals:

  1. Establishment of a body for student’s welfare with 3 major objectives:

    a) To establish a centralised mechanism for providing students an opportunity to work under professors in their projects during summer and winter breaks.

    b) Providing a stipend for such students.

    c) Formalising a training procedure for final placements by means of GDs, Assessment Tests and Interviews.

  2. Collaboration with NGOs to educate students and provide internship opportunities
  3. Introduction of Department Representatives in the Traninig and Placement Committee to make the placement process more effective and penetrative. (Proposal clarified by candidate)
  4. Streaming of news channels on the LA

Follow Ups:

We caught up with the current VP Gymkhana September 5th 2009 to see how far he had come with his proposals and we got that and and a lot, lot more. Here are some of the highlights of that interview (original post):

Shubham on his initial Proposals
1. Alternative careers group: There has been considerable progress in the following two areas:
a) Finance Cell: A student body responsible for spreading awareness of career avenues in finance (CFA etc) has seen been set up in the campus. (However, The Scholars’ Avenue is not aware of any activities by the Finance cell so far. If any reader has benefited from the above cell, please get in touch with us.)
b) Communiqué Expansion: Communiqué has expanded its scope substantially to include preparation techniques, vital tips and requisite information for cracking less yearned examinations like CFA and FRM. (Again, if a reader has attended any sessions organized by Communique for CFA and FRM, we would like to know.)

2. Placement Scenario

a) Department Representatives: Student representatives have already been appointed by the department T&P in charge to do basic research on companies that could come for placements. However, they will currently not be allowed to contact the companies directly but will rather have to hand over their research results and relevant information to the placement committee for further processes.

b) Final Year Placements: Better, extensive and in depth information of the records of students being collected. This is expected to be of great help for students who are interested in PSUs as they are particularly interested in this kind of data.
Profile Pages for each student under the IIT KGP domain being set up.
There are plans to conduct mock test sessions in October.
For the first time, two PG students have been made part of the placement committee and the step has been quite successful.(See comment on this post) [Edit: We had earlier incorrectly reported "For the first time, PG students have..." that had caused some confusion; Mr. Matah has since clarified this point to us]

3. Infrastructure for Societies

An earlier plan to utilize the CTS building had to be shelved as the place was taken up by the counselling cell. Currently, search for appropriate location is going on.

4. Tie-up with Big Bazaar

This initiative is primarily for expediting home delivery of merchandise at discounted prices via tele-shopping. However, this is not of very high priority and is not expected any time soon.

5. Sponsored Industrial B.Tech and M.Tech projects for students

The entire project has been scrapped after being declared unviable.

And there  were some of the other things that he was working on:

1. Gymkhana website : Gymkhana website slated for a massive overhaul. It will be made more interactive with polls, GC updates, online forms and lots more. (The Gymkhana website has remained inactive for the better part of this semester.)

2. Counseling Center: Mental health professional has already been hired. The plan is to train student coordinators to spot potentially suicidal students and later train them into student counselors.

3. DELL Laptop chaos rectification: After extensive negotiations, DELL has finally agreed to come to Kharagpur and host a ’service camp’ where they will offer laptop service at much cheaper rates.

4. Institutional Foreign exchange Deal: The initial plan is to facilitate and promote exchange programs in order increase exposure and interaction as well as a provision for students to go abroad at lower rates.

5. SPICMACAY: KGP chapter revived after a long gap and hence the organization of the Pt. Hariprasad concert

6. Netaji Auditorium Sound System: Set to receive a major revamp.

7. Institute ERP System: This is expected to be up by the middle of the spring semester. Student relevant modules have been proposed including an extensive hall specific module. However, this is still in the initial stage and it requires extensive data collection and is not expected soon. Also proposed are a Library module, a Gymkhana module and modules for specific societies. This project is separate from the Combo Card project which has run into rough waters. It’s at a stand-still at the moment primarily because of some negligence on the administration’s part

In the light of the placement season, on the 5th of November, we once again interviewed the incumbent VP to get an update about how his proposed improvement of the TnP system was going and we published this report in our Sep 12th Issue.

One of the most promising measures that he had set out to accomplish was the mock GD/PI sessions for all the students who registered for placements, which was supposed to have happened in mid-October according to his estimation during our last interview. Unfortunately, he informs us that this will not be happening this time around due to insufficient funds. The amount allocated to this project by the Registrar was a mere 1/4th of what was needed. In place of what would have been an extremely beneficial one-on-one session with professionals, final year students will have to do with just a seminar that is slated to happen sometime during November. Also meeting with delays was the plan to have student profile pages hosted on the IIT-KGP site. This project has been taken up by the Dean of Co-ordination and Planning and is likely to be completed this time next year. On a happier note, one of the measures that was taken by the VP in relation to placements did bear fruit, namely the appointment of department representatives. According to him, it has been “100% effective” in getting new companies for placements.

Shubham Matah says … ” For the first time, PG students have been made part of the placement committee and the step has been quite successful.”

This is incorrect. there were PG students in the placement committee since last two years.

  2. gsfozhr says:

When was the last time Scholars Avenue reported unbiased, untwisted and impersonal news!

  3. LOL says:

lol…so much bias does indeed reduce the credibility of Scholsavenue

    • Editor says:

      @LOL,
We have tried to stick to the facts as much as possible with the above article and we are quite proud of our work. The above article is also toned in the most objective way possible to negate any kind of seemingly unintended bias that might have crept in. If you feel that the above write-is biased in any way please point out specific instances of bias so that we can have a meaningful discussion instead of making snide comments that really don’t help anybody.

  4. omg says:

lol max ! scholsavenue is deleting comments…….

    • Editor says:

@omg, we have not deleted any comments. If you had posted here and it has failed to turn up, there was probably some technical problem with the submission of the form. Please re-post the comment if you want it here.

  5. :) says:

Incredible work i must say, I truly commend Schols Ave to have come up with a post on the proposals.

This lack of work on the candidates part has put the entire purpose of the SOP at stake.

The candidates now make proposals only for the heck of it, just as a showoff in the Baski Court. I am truly sorry to say that the Vice President has let down a lot many by not converting any of his very ambitious and flamboyant proposals to reality and has truly created a question amongst the general public to believe anything that is being said in the SOP

  7. Abhinav says:

@ ace@heart : PG students have been a part of this committe from the very first year it came into existence officially, the year 2007-08, Rwitam Mitra was the first official PG member of the cell

  8. Abhinav Ankur says:

@ ace@heart : Indeed, PG students have been a part of this committe from the very first year it came into existence officially, the year 2007-08, Rwitam Mitra was the first official PG member of the cell

  9. where’s the bias?? and why will TSA have a bias against Matah?
If the guys has failed to work on 4.5/5 of his proposals, I wonder how much gud things there will be to say about him.
and why do guys talking about bias and all need to hide under the facade of an arbit name?

  10. just to add one more point … if it turns out that none of the VPs ever have really been able to accomplish things in their proposals then thats a diff thing.
    is it??

  11. hello says:

Interestingly, if you read Arnav’s follow-up, it mentions that majority of Arnav’s proposals were accomplished during Matah’s tenure !

  12. Editor says:

Follow-up on Arnav’s proposals and his work last year as the VP has been added here: http://scholarsavenue.org/election-coverage/vice-president-gymkhana/arnav/

  13. Mannu says:

List of the companies are taken from the student representatives but how many departments out of all those were actually focused the way they should have been..And if they, don’t you feel any new programme being started needs special attention. And in case of Placement how many companies are asked to consider the M.Tech students, you can check the notices of T&P to see that a particular company may also consider Dual Degree student and not M.Tech of the same course. A VP is for everyone in the Institute and should target every student of Institute. I feel its more because of the internal politics of the students who choose guy like Matah by making groups of Halls in support and not deciding on the basis of the SOP.
More awareness and clearness should be brought in the functioning of Student body.

  14. kgp guy says:

I have never seen a worse vp than matah in my stay of 4 yrs. having workd with him closely for 2 yrs, it has been a real disappointment to see him change so drastically after being elected to the post of vp. hope ppl make the right choice in this election.

  15. Athena says:

It is indeed shameful to notice that not even a single proposal of the VP have been dealt with…Ordinary junta of KGP have already lost interest in the elections just because of a simple fact that they feel these involve and revolve around the pacts, loosing the greater meaning of the entire post. And in such a situation all these unkept proposals and promises of the VP contestants seem so unreasonable and don’t seem to provide any hope for the further betterment of this system.

And as ace@heart points out ‘there were PG students in the placement committee since last two years’.. It is preposterous of the VP to make such a statement, twisting the facts.

  16. someguy says:

Matah’s comments on his follow up is pretty funny.. It almost appears like he’s trying to defend a very lame CV before some very ignorant employer…

  17. @Mannu says:

@Mannu, the companies decide whom to recruit, the vp does not :D :P

  18. another kgp guy says:

I have worked with Shubham quite closely too. known him for a year now. although i havent seen many vp’s, but am sure that this senior of mine is GOD !

  19. some kgp guy says:

    yooo matah !!!!

  20. some kgp guy says:

yo matah !!! matah is GOD…

  21. Tanmay says:

@another kgp.. i guess you are one desperate member/head craving to become a kshitij head/scom. good fight and sycophancy

  22. Tanmay says:

@some kgp.. same answer for you too.. but i guess you are trying the same in some society like TDS..

  23. Tanmay says:

@matah- you’r the right material to enter indian politics.. might as well make a fortune.. these are the examples when you actually feel “Pact system sucks”

  24. FacchaRocks says:

Good job Mr. Matah. Come with your girlfriend next year too during KTJ and show her the whole place while we first year volus had to go hungry the whole day. You made us do all the dirty work during KTJ and in the end you take all the credit!! What a loser!

  25. Mannu says:

@ @Mannu & another kgp guy: What if the same company said that they were’nt told about this course and one one of the student got placed in that firm….lol.. then whom to look after and That Matah was their when the company representative was saying this statement.. …

  26. LoSt in Poltu games says:

If what all is said is true about current VP why should he be allowed to use the post for his personal gains(like refrain him from writing it in his CV)?? devise some mechanism for people who ditched their words to face the consequences. some neutral authority(like Scholars Avenue) has to intervene to clear air how much was promised how much was done.. where are the mistakes committed… what are the steps to be taken…. a complete white paper has to be published on out going counsel…. based on which necessary action can be taken!…. we people hate politicians outside but while coming to our elections we behave more pathetic than politicians… Truly hurt by attitude of so called gods when their word is not heard…no moral authority just brute force to see their motives accomplished at any cost!!…. so sad
