The 51st Convocation of IIT Kharagpur was held on the 13th of August, with Mr. Vinod Gupta, distinguished alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and Chairman, InfoUSA as the Chief Guest. The convocation was attended by 1152 students (435 MTech, 309 BTech, 50 PhD, 97 MSc and 49 MBM graduates), who were resplendent in robes of yellow and pink for the ceremony. Siddhartha Brahma was awarded the President of India gold medal, Dipanjan Das was given the B.C. Roy memorial gold medal and Arindam Basu received the Prime Minister of India gold medal at the convocation. Anurag Rana has won the J.C. Ghosh Gold Medal.

Vinod Gupta said that he was planning to set up a school of intellectual property, the first of its kind in the country, named after Rajiv Gandhi, the late Prime Minister. “India is producing incredible amounts of intellectual property (IP) in the form of research and new inventions and we need to protect that intellectual property of our scientists, engineers and other professionals,” said Gupta, while announcing the plan during his convocation speech. Kalyan Chakraborti, former Dean, VGSOM has been asked to look after the programme at the grass-roots level. Gupta plans to rope in Professors from the US, where, he said, that IP is a major issue in all fields of technology. He has also vouched to invest an initial sum of $1 million as seed capital for the school.

Vinod Gupta gifted ’51st Convocation’ t-shirts at the ceremony. It was also a welcome change for the students to receive laminated copies of their degree, rather than an ordinary piece of paper. Other speeches by Prof. S.K.Dubey, Director and Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman of the Board of Governors, included plans of setting up a Biotechnology Park and spending as much as Rs. 40 crore to up the infrastructure of the Institute over the next two years.
