The list of recipients of the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize was declared on September 27th. Among the 11 awardees this year is Prof. Sirshendu De of the Department of Chemical Engineering who was awarded the prize for his work on membrane based separation processes. The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology is awarded annually by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for notable and outstanding research in various scientific and engineering fields. It has the distinction of being the highest award for science in India. Prof. De has set up a membrane separation laboratory at the Chemical Engineering Department. “For long, I have been working on the design and modelling aspect so that we can develop low cost technology in place of costly mechanisms in juice and stream processing. We have also developed processed juices like orange juice which have a high shelf life without additives or preservatives,” Prof. De said. He was also recently in the news for his role in the development of a unique water purification system for removing impurities like arsenic in a cost effective manner.
