1) What are the major areas of research under the UC Berkeley-IIT Kharagpur collaboration?
The collaboration focuses mainly on Bio-energy and Emerging and Neglected Diseases.
2) What departments and specializations is the internship open for?
The program is uniquely designed to involve faculty from both IIT Kharagpur and UC Berkeley along with the student during the internship and after. Currently, faculty from the departments of Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Geology and Geophysics, and Physics are involved in the collaboration. 3) What is the selection procedure?
Students are selected on the basis of mutual consultation between the faculty of UC Berkeley and their collaborators at IIT Kharagpur. The exact particulars vary depending on individual faculty, ranging from telephonic interviews to direct selection based on recommendation by faculty at IIT Kharagpur.
4) How do I apply?
The ideal way to start would be to get involved in a related project with a faculty at IIT Kharagpur who is involved in the collaboration. Since faculty to faculty interaction holds a unique place in this collaboration, recommendation by faculty at IIT Kharagpur assumes prime significance. The selection process starts during the month of November and the list of interns is expected to be finalized by the end of January.
5) I am currently working on a project which falls in the realm of the collaboration, but my advisor at IIT Kharagpur is not a part of the collaboration. Can I apply for the internship?
Please talk to your faculty at IIT Kharagpur regarding the collaboration and with Mr. Shail Kumar (shailkumar@berkeley.edu) regarding the possibility of your integration with the collaboration.
6) How is the internship funded?
The complete expenditure for hosting a student at UC Berkeley, including accommodation, food and travel is accounted for through sponsorship from a variety of organizations and individuals. Please see the ‘Support Us’ page for a complete list of sponsors.
