Inter Hall Athletics 2012

They were a hectic two days , the first dominated by a strong Nehru contingent which bagged most of the medals in Field Events, while the other belonged to RP Hall. After ending the first day with a commanding lead of 17 points over RP Hall, followed closely by Patel Hall, few believed anything else but a Nehru victory lay on the cards. However, the second day of the competition witnessed a reversal of fortunes with RP Hall, bagging an imperious 46 points vs Nehru’s 18, clinching the Athletics GC, in emphatic fashion, after a period of four years.
With two events left on the day, a dogfight ensued. Nehru led by a narrow margin, their confidence prominently on display. As heads started to droop in the RP contingent, there was a swing in momentum with RP winning an unexpected bronze in the 5K(Men), which snowballed into a complete rout of their opponents in the 400m(Men). A clean sweep of the medals meant that RP lead going into the last event of the day, the 4*100M relay. Aiming to finish better than Nehru, to ensure the Gold, it was a tense situation in both camps (this writer was nervously chewing off his nails during the entire ordeal). However, it all went according to the script, with RP winning the Gold Medal and hence, the overall General Championship (GC). A balanced performance in both track and field events, capped off by a silver in the 4*100M relay over Nehru, meant that Patel Hall won the overall Bronze medal.
Nehru’s charge was lead under the commendable guidance of Inter- IIT Athletics Captain, Vaibhav Jhonny, who won the Individual Championship(IC) after three individual Gold medals (400M Hurdles, 110M Hurdles, Long Jump), while Sharmila Chaudhari won the IC in the women’s category. Special Mention for ILK Gangaraju (RP Hall) who won his fourth consecutive Gold medal in the 100M Men’s category and Samar V. S. Chandel (RP Hall), who bagged two individual gold medals(400M, 200M), one silver(400M Hurdles) while also winning two gold medals in the 4*400M and 4*100M Men’s relays, powering RP to the overall General Championship.

A highly competitive yet good spirited event all in all, means a strong showing in Inter-IIT 2012, Roorkee is on the cards. Kudos to all participants and winners and best of luck for the Inter-IIT’s from The Scholars’ Avenue team.
