Genese-de-Strategie, the Business Strategy and Consulting Club of IIT Kharagpur, had recently organized Indian Case Challenge 2012 – the largest Indian case study competition of its kind. For the uninitiated, such a competition requires participants to form 3-4 member teams and create case studies, which are records of research pertaining to the development of something over a period of time. The grand finale of the event was held from 13th-15th January, 2012, at IIT Kharagpur. Out of over a hundred entries, 9 teams were selected for the finals. These teams were from IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi College of Engineering as well as the home IIT, among others. The finalists were invited for a 3 day trip to IIT Kharagpur, where they were handed a 24 hour case study on viral digital marketing by Taragana, a leading software product development and online media company. The case was unveiled during the inauguration ceremony on the morning of the 13th. Following that, the teams were given proper accommodation at guest houses and working facilities at the IIT Kharagpur Central Library. The first round of presentation was taken on 14th by Mr. Angshuman Chakraborty, the CEO of Taragana. Following the first round, 4 teams were shortlisted for the final round. The final round took place on the 15th, where the 4 selected teams gave presentations in front of an esteemed jury panel that included professors from IIT Kharagpur, as well as industry specialists. Team Business Simplified from IIT Delhi and KIT Jaipur bagged the ICC 2012 shield, along with a prize of INR 25,000. Seeing the superb level of competition, Mr. Angshuman offered internship roles in Taragana to 6 of the finalists, as well as a full time role to another finalist. Keeping in mind the driving idea behind the Indian Case Challenge, which is benefiting the overall community as a whole, club GDS will publish all the solutions of the finalist teams as a case book which can be availed free of cost from their website.

the Indian Case Challenge 2012 also included a delegate dinner at the Dreamland restaurant, an institute tour and other social activities. The fact that the finalists were given a live case by a reputed company ensured a challenging case environment, where the finalists were judged on-spot on the basis of their business acumen, industry knowledge and presentation skills. Internship and placement opportunities were further incentives for the finalists in what turned out to be a remarkably well organised and high quality competition. The event was an overall success.

The Closing Tethys Project at the Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University (ANU) seeks two high-achieving students to enrol as PhD candidates. The students selected would gain expertise in computational structural geology, geodesy and geophysics and 4D tectonic reconstruction. The applicants should be highly motivated with the desire and capacity to undertake both fundamental and applied research. The academic track record must enable them to win a scholarship from ANU in the normal selection round. Suitable candidates will be offered a three month internship at ANU during 2012 to allow project staff to assess their capabilities prior to the deadlines for PhD scholarship applications in 2012.

The Tethys Ocean once separated Eurasia and the dispersing fragments of Gondwana. When Tethys began to close, about 120-90 million years ago, these fragments (i.e., Africa, Arabia, India, and Australia) were driven northward. The leading edges of these continents acted as relatively strong indentors that ploughed into the complex geography of the northern Tethyan margin (i.e. Eurasia). We want to understand the dynamics of this process, loosely referred to in the Earth Sciences as the end of a Wilson Cycle. To this purpose the project will develop a unified dynamic model of the closure of the ancient Tethys Ocean from deep time until the present day. Such a dynamic model will require the application of forces and boundary conditions to move and deform tectonic plates, and in the process lead to the development of geodynamic theory while producing tectonic reconstructions that are consistent with geology, geodesy, and the timing of event sequences measured at “orogenic listening posts”.

Prefinal year students strongly interested in doing a Ph.D can approach the contact, Professor Gordon Lister, to enrol themselves in this program.

The Scholars’ Avenue presents its Internship Blog : internships.scholarsavenue.org

Did you spend your summer roaming the streets of night-time Amsterdam? Did you come back with a pile of money and an awesome experience to boot? Perhaps you took the road less taken, and had an out-of-the-box internship? Whether the summer saw you rediscovering the zeal for engineering or losing interest in everything technical, it’s probably a story worth telling. And we’re listening.

thescholarsavenue@gmail.com.

To start off, we have entries from a few fourth years who interned at companies like ITC and HUL.

Read and be read!

As part of the UC Berkeley-IIT Kharagpur collaboration, applications are invited for an 8-weeks summer research program at UC Berkeley. Please submit your information by Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010. Students will be selected by Friday, Feb. 19. Additional information will be shared with selected students after that.

You will be pleased to note that a larger number of departments are now part of the program — biotechnology, chemistry, chemical engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, geology/geophysics, mechanical engineering, math and statistics. If students in the food and agricultural engineering have molecular biology/biochemistry expertise then would also be eligible.

The program is open to 3rd year undergraduate students with someexceptions for 4th year students (returning students). Preference will be given to students from faculty where there is interest for further collaboration/or there is an existing collaboration (Suman Chakraborty, TK Maiti and MD Behera)

This invitation is open to 3rd year IIT Kharagpur’s undergraduate students from departments listed above. Exceptions may be made for 4th year B.Tech/M.Tech dual degree students who participated in the 2009 summer research program at Berkeley.
