The Inter IIT Energy Saving Championship
Thursday, September 2nd, 2010
Techfest, the annual Science & Technology festival of IIT Bombay is organizing the first Inter IIT Energy Saving Championship this year. Initiated to make people compete for the cause of energy conservation, the focus will be to encourage youth to take up responsibilities for the society.
Five IITs- Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Madras are competing. The basis would be checking the per capita energy consumption at the institute. The bills of individual months of previous years of each participating IIT have already been reviewed and would be the guiding factor for checking the decrement in energy consumption. Efficient energy use and innovative saving methods will play an important role in deciding the winners.
A panel comprising of professors as faculty in-charges and students has already been formed in each IIT to handle the event. Here in Kharagpur, the panel is composed of Prof. Prabodh Bajpai, Prof. N. K. Kishore and seven student members from AIESEC, IIT Kharagpur, which is helping moderate the event.
by students. Incepted in 1998 with the vision to improve the technical standards of
students across India, it has come up with several initiatives with focuses on
encouraging youth to take up responsibilities for the society. In this series another of
Techfest’s initiatives is the Inter –IIT Energy Saving Championship. They are
initiating this process as a competition to make people compete for a noble cause, i.e.
Energy Conservation.
Being the students of one of the premier institutes of India we should come
forward to give a serious thought on several such environmental issues, which have
to be addressed the sooner it is possible. We perceive that other institutes would also
come with a similar idea which would surely revolutionize energy conservation at an
academic level.
A total of 5 IIT’s, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur and
IIT Madras are locking horns in the Inter-IIT Energy Saving Championship. The
basis of the competition would be checking the per capita in the energy consumption.
A panel comprising of respected Professors as faculty in-charges and students has
already been made in all these IIT’s to handle the event in the respective IIT. In IIT
Kharagpur, the panel constitutes two Professors In-charge; Prof. Prabodh Bajpai,
Prof. N. K. Kishore and seven student members from AIESEC IIT Kharagpur;
Shubhanshu Mishra, Anil Pulakanti, Praful Puranik, Karthik Reddy, Aditi Garg,
Pranjal Yadav and Pratik Roy Chowdhary. AIESEC IIT Kharagpur would be
helping in moderating the event; at the same time ensuring its smooth and successful
conduction.
The Inter-IIT Energy General Championship would last from September to
November. Whether you make the most innovative bulb or just switch off the lights
when not in use; it will automatically reflect in the bills of your IIT. The bills of
individual months of previous years of each participating IIT have already been
reviewed and would be the guiding factor for checking the decrement in energy
consumption.
The winner of this Championship would be given a trophy and would be
crowned the Champions of the First such Edition. So, the pride of your IIT lies on
your shoulders. Make your IIT stand out by making it the most energy-efficient. The
traditional IIT rivalry has really redefined itself.
