The campus newspaper of IIT Kharagpur

General Secretary Social-Cultural Candidate : Surbhi Narain

Proposal 1: NATIONWIDE PROMOTION OF CULTURE AND TRADITION OF IIT KHARAGPUR’S ILLUMINATION & RANGOLI AND VARIOUS INTER-HALL PERFORMANCES (WITH SOCIAL THEME), BY COVERAGE THROUGH NEWS CHANNELS AND NON-GOVERNMENT ORGANISATION.

Pros: Showcasing Illumination and Rangoli at a national level translates into greater limelight and publicity for IIT Kharagpur, while warming up IIT aspirants to our campus and its culture. Nationwide coverage would further incentivize the halls to innovate and explore fresher, grander themes. Moreover, assisting NGOs in the promotion of a social cause by using footage from GC events is a noble suggestion, and one that can be realized without any extra effort / expenditure from the student body.

Cons: Neither suggestion results in any direct, tangible benefit to the average Kgpian. Further, it may be noted that regional coverage of Illumination and Rangoli by local Bangla news channels is already in place.

Proposal 2: PROCURING VARIAC, SMOKE AND STROBE MACHINE FOR EVENTS IN NETAJI AUDITORIUM IN ORDER TO CONDUCT GENERAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN MORE ECONOMIC FASHION.

Pros: We are surprised this hasn’t already been done! Not only would it be economical for the Gymkhana in the long run, procurement of the listed equipment would also enable the halls to test the gear before the event (which is not always possible in the current scenario).

Cons: The reason for our surprise also makes us wary. Accommodation of the required initial investment in the budget might be more troublesome for the Gymkhana than is apparent.

Proposal 3: SCRIPT – WRITING COMPETITION SPRING FEST 2013

Pros: If implemented as promised, the proposal would aid the emergence of fresh literary talent in this part of the country. Certification by renowned film institutes would surely bolster a budding scriptwriter’s credentials. And hasn’t everyone been complaining about the sorry state of Indian cinema?

Cons: We’re not convinced. It remains to be seen whether the best scripts are deemed nearly good enough to be converted into actual productions. This might just turn out to be another one of those empty promises.
