The Open IIT Powerlifting compeitition took place over the weekend comprising the 29th and 30th of October. There were 5 events, divided on the basis of the type of weights the participants had to lift. Nehru Hall largely stole the show, winning 3 out of the 5 golds on offer. Their stars were Pushpendra Meena, who won a gold in the ‘under 62 kg’ category, Makrand Mahalley, who emerged champion in the ‘under 69 kg’ category and Niteesh Balal, who won the ‘under 77 kg’ category. However, the standout performer was Azad Hall’s Pappula Sandeep, who created an IIT record by lifting an amazing 420 kg to win the ‘open’ category, where there are no restrictions on the maximum weight a participant is allowed to lift. He beat his nearest opponent by a weight margin of more than 100 kg.
The entire competition was staged in the old gymkhana beside the institute volleyball courts. Although the inter halls are far away, the scheduled dates being in mid March, the Open IIT event served its purpose by providing a platform to the halls to assess their chances for the general championship event. If this is anything to go by, the inter hall prospects are definitely looking bright for Nehru Hall.
