Mishap at South Carolina – Kgp Student Drowns

Posted in: Events Outside Kgp on June 30, 2009 | Comments (42)

We have just received word of an unfortunate incident involving Sandesh Kumar Jat, a 2006 batch BTech student of Chemical Engineering, who was interning at the University of South Carolina this year. Sandesh, a resident of RP Hall and a native of Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, had gone for a swim with a friend to Folly Beach at 5 pm Saturday, local time (yesterday morning IST) and apparently drowned. The incident is currently being investigated by the police and details are scarce.

The Dean of Student Affairs Prof. Souvik Bhattacharyya has contacted the American Embassy at Kolkata as well as one Siva Balasubramanian, a graduate student working under Sandesh’s mentor, Professor John Weidner (Associate Chair, Chemical Engineering, SC) for information. The immediate concern right now is bringing Sandesh’s body back to India. Influential alumni at Washington have also been contacted by the Dean of Alumni Affairs, Prof. Amit Patra for the recovery of the corpse, currently under the custody of local police. A family member has to claim the body within a maximum of 7 days; a visa for this purpose requires a letter of invitation from the university or the local governing authority (the Indian Embassy at Washington has a say in such matters). Sandesh’s relatives are seeking help from the Ministry in this regard.

This has been an extremely unfortunate incident to exacerbate what has already proven to be a dark year in IIT Kharagpur’s history. We express our condolences to Sandesh’s family and friends. Updates on the circumstances are to follow once we receive more information.

We also request anybody who feels they may be of help to his relatives to let us know as soon as possible; we shall put them through to the Dean’s office at the earliest.

Update
Sandesh’s body is in Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston, SC. An autopsy has been conducted on the body and the details of it have been communicated to his family and relatives. The coroner’s office in Charleston handles matters related to moving the body from USA to India. This transfer of body is an expensive affair but thankfully Sandesh had medical insurance coverage from India as well as USA which will take care of this expenditure. They are trying to send the body when they finish all the legal procedure here.

Life isn’t cheap as long as we stick to basics. In this case, the basic is: swimming is not suggested in unknown places. An age-old one, but we intend to overlook it. Anyways, really feel sorry for Sandesh.

  31. Vishwajeet Kumar Says:

May your soul rest in peace.I’ll miss u buddy and your talks.I am totally shocked by reading this.

  32. Vishwa Says:

It’s a shattering news. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Remember him very vividly from 1st year.

Every now and then we hear people drowning in rivers, seas and yet every single time we think that we will be safe. Anything even remotely dangerous can be perilous and better safe than sorry. I would suggest people to avoid such situations where a little bit of extra thrill can lead to such grave consequences.

  33. surendra Says:

I heard of this news yesterday. It is really sad as I had known him. His smile is still vivid in my memory.
May God give his family strength to bear the loss and may his soul rest in peace.

  34. wisher Says:

Dear friends…It’s not a strange phenomenon..It is strange to see that still why we don’t inquire about death..If there is some fever in the body, it is understood that there is some problem in the body and we go to a doctor..But there are so many problems in the universal society body, but we never inquire…and we never meet a proper doctor like saints and great enlightened beings…Mistake is a mistake if we don’t learn from it and it is not if we learn from it…Let the Sandesh’s incident open a new chapter in our lives and let us become serious about LIFE.

  35. Alok Says:

I still cannot believe we have lost Sandesh. He was always smiling, always ready to do stuff with a lot of enthusiasm…
May your soul rest in peace, Sandesh.

  36. kushank Says:

    sad :(

  37. Tina Amoureuse Says:

    Rest in peace , Sandesh . :(

  38. Gyan Says:

I first come to know about it from someone’s status msg on Gtalk. It is a very disheartening and unfortunate incident. We, the students of IIT Kgp, sympathize with the family of Sandesh. But students shouldnt get discouraged due to this incident and shouldnt stop pursuing their internships abroad.Such an unfortunate incident can happen anywhere even in India, so we shouldnt let this break our confidence and if needed should go for higher education abroad, keeping just one thing in mind to be less adventurous as someone will be waiting for u back in ur nation.

  39. Vikram Rathi Says:

It’s sad, Sandesh was a good friend of mine.
May his soul rest in peace.

  40. vaibhavi Says:

i really very shocked when i recieve this news. he was really a bright student.

  41. ramesh Says:

quite a folly at folly beach .. may he rest in peace ..

  42. Chrisogonas Mc'Odhiambo Says:

Much peace, much love and much comfort to family and friends of Sandesh. I did not know Sandesh in person, but nevertheless when a brother is gone we share messages of condolences.

    thx
