Tragedy at MMM- A student ends life.

Manoj Kumar, a first year undergraduate student from the department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his room, N414, Madan Mohan Malaviya Hall of Residence on the 15th of June, 2009.

Originally from Bharatpur, Rajasthan, Manoj had been staying back for the summer quarters to clear his pending course, Programming and Data Structures, and was last seen alive on Thursday (11th June 2009). His body was discovered by a sweeper, who checked through the ventilator to identify the source of the stench emanating from the room. He promptly notified the authorities, who took charge of the situation at hand. Given the condition of his corpse, it is estimated that he took his life on Friday.

We offer our sincere condolences to Manoj’s family and friends.

  1. sincere condolences to manoj’s family. its a sad news.
the loss of a competent student is a serious setback to nation as well.
i always wonder, why doesnt the authorities come up with special classes for students who had no previous exposure to computers. i have known students in my first year, who were handling computers for the first time at IIT, and felt nervous to even touch the mouse. How can some people bridge such a huge gap and even come to terms with programming skills..? authorities must take progressive action towards this.

Come on, the guy could not deal with a simple failure to pass in a subject – our nation can make do without such spineless people

What do you mean by “our nation can make do without such spineless people”. may be our nation make do many things but what about Manoj’s family??? He was just in firstyear, may not be too mature for such pressure. Authority should have some sort of counselling and extra classes for to stop these sort of incidences.

Condolences to Manoj family… May his soul rest in peace

It’s again a sad news. My sincere condolences to Manaj’s family.
We have to rethink of the class pressure for the first year students. Moreover, there is no open air in the environment
-no place for recreation-possibly, the small campus in a
village a like place as Kharagpur is responsible. Needless to
mention that we are selfish enough to extend our hand to
our friends for necessary help. We must change our attitude.
We must understand that the basic purpose of getting educated
is to build a healthy/responsible personality- not to think of
how to excell in carear, get the best package or migrate to serve for others after passing out and how soon can we forget all contributions of our teachers, parents and nation- a shameful
    state-

I am shocked at hearing about so many suicide cases at IITKGP in the recent past. Some steps worth consideration to prevent such incidents in future :
    1) Counselling Center : where students can get help in coping up with academic/peer pressure
    2) Discontinue the summer suppli system. perhaps this extreme step wouldnt have been taken if there were others around in the hostel (with whom he could talk and get some help)

A line of pass/fail has to be drawn somewhere, so I wouldnt suggest something as extreme as doing away with the current grading system.
