Proposal for Joint Degree Programmes Approved
The Institute Board of Governors in its 159th meeting held on the 24th of February has approved the proposal for admission to the Joint M.Sc. – Ph.D and Joint M.Tech. – Ph.D Programmes through all India tests of JAM and GATE respectively.
Integrated M.Sc. students admitted through JEE would also get a monthly scholarship of Rs. 5,000 for their last two years. The criteria for selections, however, has not yet been worked out. Click here to read the notice.
A monthly scholarship of Rs. 5,000 to each student admitted into the Joint M.Sc. – Ph.D programme through JAM and research assistantship thereafter has also been approved. This step is in tune with the institute’s agenda to motivate young and aspiring students to join the Ph.D Programmes in large numbers.
The existing two-year M.Sc. programme will be discontinued in favour of this Joint degree in all the science departments. A student admitted to this dual degree programme will be allowed to enroll for the Ph.D degree provided he/she has a minimum CGPA at the end of the 4th semester, failing which he/she will have to leave with an M.Sc. degree. The student may also, by himself decide not to continue and leave with an M.Sc. degree at the end of the 4th semester. This new system will come into effect once the exact modalities regarding the admissions, enrolment and number of seats are worked out, and this might be as early as the coming academic year.
In addition to this, Integrated M.Sc. students admitted through JEE would also get a monthly scholarship of Rs. 5,000 for their last two years. Again, the criteria for selections has not yet been worked out. GATE qualified and Dual Degree students would continue to get their Assistantship at the current rate.
Watch out for more on this in our upcoming issue.
