9/8/05 Need For Speed

Love it or hate it, you can’t ignore it.

If you are a kgpian it is like a doze of oxygen you cannot survive without. Small interruptions and slow network speed become much debated topics on any platform that a Kgpian can find.

With growing expectations, increasing demands and flourishing technology, CIC has done its bit by coming up with its plans for upgradation of LAN. The new Reliance Optical fibre links for both 8 Mbps shared (1:4) and 8 Mbps raw (1:1) are already up for testing. The links could be tested by using the following proxies:

144.16.192.245 : 8080
144.16.192.213 : 8080
144.16.192.216 : 7777
144.16.192.247 : 8080

IIT Kgp revolutionized campus life a few springs ago by setting up the campus wide network connecting computers throughout the departments and the halls of residence. Further revolution is in the pipeline. If all goes well and if the IIT Foundation could get positive results on its proposals, MMM Hall could be integrated into this already existing LAN system through wireless LAN.

These are early days yet, but the pros and cons of wireless LAN are already being discussed amongst those who matter. Wireless LAN would be a better bet if mobility is the guiding factor, but it comes at the price of bandwidth restrictions. A final and official word is awaited, but Kgpians sure have a lot to look forward to.
